Now this really was contentious! Owen Thackeray and I were asked to design a poster for our first year show's fundraiser.
Brief: Disaster!
Timeframe: ASAP (2-3 days or thereabouts)
Result:
The Mothership celebrated her 50th year on this planet last April and I designed the invite for it.
It was a bit of a rush job (my fault for not prioritising really). Anyway it did the trick and a fantastic array of friends turned up, some of whom she hadn't seen for ten years or so. It was a really great party.
What a first exhibition. I’m pretty sure I read that every single piece was sold. I’m not surprised.
I redrew the original three starting Pokemon to better fit with the Pikachu I doodled earlier this month.
OLLY MOSS IS A GENIUS.

Found this through Ben Lambert when discussing DC Comics’ controversial rebrand/reboot. A very nicely designed site, available in either centred or flushed left; something more sites should do. I also love comparing previous and new logos, and trying to figure out what the thought process was.
And this is just one of those new products Rod’s company have been developing: The Rotolight Anova. A studio light with some fantastic features, as well as an impressive efficiency compared to other products currently on the market. A 1000 watt light running on just 38 watts of power 93% is more efficient than a studio light. So whereas most could do 2-3 hours, this can do 8. Anyway, I’m just quoting facts from the video now. Looks fantastic.
The Rotolight has been a huge success, and I couldn’t be happier. The guy on the right is Rod Gammons; designer, company owner and personal friend. His business card is one of the few I always carry with me, and I’d like to think I’m a good ambassador for his company. I was supplied with a kit and have used it ever since. Especially useful for portrait photography and filming, this remarkably affordable kit gives you professional-looking results. Rod is usually abroad somewhere exotic promoting the kit, whilst simultaneously developing new products.

I really miss Derek. He was one of the nicest and most talented people I met while at Kingston. His piano skills are truly spectacular, and that’s before you hand him a camera. I’ve been enjoying his website all week and recommend you check it out. Oh and I also owe him big-time for all the help he’s given me, not least in the bike shed. Ok that sounds perverse but it’s not: he’s got bicycle skills too.

Oli was on my course with me at Kingston. Admittedly, this is a placeholder website while he builds his proper one, but the work still speaks for itself. My own personal favourite is ‘100m keg’, which is a brilliant combination of factual information and clever metaphor. He’s a big QI fan, and you can tell.
Wes Anderson essentially makes the same film over and over nowadays, but it’s still a film I’m willing to watch. If only for Fort Lebanon.

Well this was a pleasant surprise! I was having a quick look through my Twitter followers and discovered Miss Wozniak. She didn’t look like a bot, so I checked out her link and WOW! Her work is beautiful, I especially liked her cigar branding, I have not seen a lot of that lately! Also, what is it with all of these amazing designers from Halifax? I thought it was meant to be a dump. Anyway, I’ve now added it to the list of places I want to visit.
Amazing opening scene to HBO’s 24/7 documentary. This year followed the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, in the run-up to the January 2nd Winter Classic. Great use of John Murphy’s Adagio in G Minor.

Found this guy through his rather tasty Scrabble board (via @lucysajoke) and realised he’d designed the excellent “Meet Your Type” guide for Fontshop. Love it when that happens, oh and some of his branding work is excellent too.
Via Marcus Leis Allion, this is a lovely homage to books. Stop-frame animation is overused, I’d be the first to admit. However here it not only works; it’s also relevant to the subject.
